Setup & key ideas
Also called forward shoulder-roll omoplata escape
Before you start
- You are still on your knees with room to turn your head outside and place the trapped-side shoulder on the mat; the attacker has not flattened and immobilized you.
Key ideas
- Turn your head away from the attacker and lower the trapped-side shoulder toward the mat.
- Follow the shoulder roll with your body rather than leaving the trapped arm behind.
- Protect the freed arm and recognize the next position; the roll alone does not win the scramble.
Common pitfalls
- Expecting a forward roll to guarantee top position or a completed escape from the resulting pin.
- Trying to force the roll after the shoulder is immobilized under finishing pressure; tap and reset.
