Setup & key ideas

Before you start

  • The opponent is standing in front of your open guard and a heel connection is available.
  • The tripod hook configuration must be established; the tomahawk version uses different body and leg positions.

Key ideas

  • Connect to the heel before trying to remove their base.
  • Coordinate the push against their body with blocks on both legs.
  • A useful endpoint includes following onto top, beyond the initial loss of balance.

Common pitfalls

  • Mixing the tripod and tomahawk hook configurations as if they were the same variation.
