Setup & key ideas
Also called tight-waist half-butterfly pass · half-butterfly inside-pummel pass
Before you start
- Top half-butterfly with a tight waist, your knee past their knee line and access to pin their wrist.
Key ideas
- Keep the tight waist, pin their wrist with a straight arm and bring your weight forward into a sprawl.
- Step the hooked leg sideways to open their foot before pummelling your other foot inside; do not force the pummel while their hook stays compact.
- Extend the inside foot and step wide while your torso opens their hooking knee, then clear your knee and bring it underneath their pinned arm to settle beside the body.
Common pitfalls
- Trying to pummel before opening a tight hook, leaving yourself easy to tilt.
- Calling the pass finished while your leg is still caught or before your upper body settles.

Where this can lead
- Side control · In control
The butterfly hook releases, both knees move outside their legs and upper-body control settles beside the torso.
